Thanksgiving is the holiday that brings family and friends together for a delicious meal. When hosting, it can be tempting to leave the kitchen to spend time with your guests or the kitchen may become a gathering place for everyone while you cook.
Though this holiday is about spending time together, you also need to keep in mind the risks having company can create in the kitchen.
- If using multiple small appliances (crockpots, instant pot, etc) to prepare or heat food, avoid overloading outlets or using extension cords.
- Keep pot handles turned away from the edge of the stove to avoid someone bumping the pot off the stove or young children grabbing handles.
- Keep kitchen knives away from the edge of the counter and immediately wash them after use rather than leaving them at the bottom of the sink. This will prevent accidental cuts when the sink gets crowded with dishes.
- Encourage children to play in an area out of the kitchen or plan activities that could be done at the kitchen table to stay out of your way as you move around cooking.
- Stay in the kitchen when food is cooking! It is easy to lose track of time, not hear a timer ring, or have food on the stove overcook when socializing in another room.
