Smoke detectors are one important factor to help you escape a house fire. But did you know WHERE you install smoke detectors in your home matters? Here are some guidelines to help you!????A smoke detector should be placed on each level of the home including basements and attics.

????Each bedroom and the hallway or space immediately outside of sleeping areas should have a smoke detector.

????If you have a designated room for laundry in the home, a smoke detector should be installed here as dryers are the cause of over 15,000 home fires a year.

????Smoke detectors should NOT be placed in garages as car exhaust creates smoke and carbon dioxide which sets off smoke detectors, giving you a possible false alarm.

????Steam created in bathrooms can also cause false alarms and so installing smoke detectors in bathrooms is NOT recommended.

????Use of cooking appliances naturally produces steam and smoke. A smoke detector that is within ten feet of these appliances can give a false alarm. Instead, install smoke detectors at least ten feet away from cooking appliances.

????Airflow from windows, vents, fans and doors can push smoke away from smoke detectors preventing it from sounding. Install away from these drafty areas in a room.
Correct answer on Thursday’s question was C…on each level of the home and in each bedroom.
